10 Downing Street Petition
Preparations for the International Day of Peace got under way early when most of the Inner Wheel Club of Buckingham members signed a letter as a petition to Prime Minster Blair asking him to agree that "Unless attacked, our nation pledges to do all that we can to observe the United Nations call for a day of global ceasefire and non violence on the 24th Anniversary of the International Day of Peace, 21 September 2006." The letter asked that Prime Minister Tony Blair should fax this commitment to the United Nations in time for the 21st September.

With this in mind an appointment was made to deliver the petitions to No 10. At 12.15pm on the 19th September President Heli Aslett and Past President Glenna Hughes went to No 10 Downing Street to present the members petitions. Some days later a reply came from M Davies of the Direct Communications Unit in Downing Street reassuring us that the Government is strongly commited to the principles of International Peace Day. However there was no reassurance that the petition had been faxed to the United Nations as we had requested either on or after the 21st September.
