Rosemary Heywood Awarded Paul Harris Fellowship
At Rotary President's night this year, held in the Jubilee Hall Buckingham School, there was a real cause for celebration for both the Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs of Buckingham as two members were presented with one of the highest accolade that Rotary can bestow The Paul Harris Fellowship Award, given in recognition of outstanding contributions to the community and which is felt to demonstrate "Service above Self".
Steve and Rosemary Heywood were presented with this award for long term services to the community of Buckingham. This couple, well known locally, founded The Buckingham Carnival also known as The Christmas Parade in 1984 and have continued to work tirelessly on the project for the past 21 years.
In early December the Buckingham Christmas Parade brings together a huge number of the town's people who enjoy the spectacle. Each year a new theme is chosen and dozens of competitors turn up in a variety of guises to parade through the town's half mile stretch with thousands of spectators enjoying the fun of the day, cheering and laughing. The hours of thought and organisation put in each year by Steve and Rosemary is phenomenal. We all offer our thanks to Steve and Rosemary for creating this wonderful part of Buckingham's folklore.
In 1994 Steve joined Rotary and became President in 2002 - 2003. He has served on the committee in several capacities and is at present the Club Secretary.
Rosemary joined Inner Wheel in 1994 and has served on the committee for many years. She was President in 1998 - 1999 and again in 2001 – 2002 and is in her 4 year as Overseas Correspondent. Rosemary also organises the Shoe Box collection each year which is taken overseas by Bob Parfitt as a Christmas present for families in which ever country is most deprived, often due to conflicts.
